Our Work // Johnson's Brookview Taxidermy

Give us a call to discuss the different options in preserving your trophy, such as: types of poses, custom base work, habitat and plaque options, etc… We will gather all the information needed to bring your vision to reality. We offer an affordable mount with true lifelike appeal and use the latest taxidermy techniques and the highest quality tanning.

All work is completed in a ‘first come, first serve’ manner. If there is a need to get your trophy back sooner than allowed by normal turn-around, we offer a guaranteed 90-day rush service - please call for details. For hunting groups we offer a wholesale option. Please call Chad to discuss these terms and conditions.

A key element to getting back a quality mount is proper field care. Many trophies are ruined before they arrive to the taxidermist. To ensure your trophy is skinned and stored properly, talk to your guide, outfitter and/or taxidermist to make all the necessary preparations to ensure proper preservation.

Most Common Mistakes:

  • Whitetail
  • Dragging behind an ATV, which can ruin the shoulder hair.
  • Cutting the cape too short while skinning or gutting, this does not leave enough hide to cover the form.
  • Leaving the deer in the back of a truck or on the garage floor too long, which can cause the hide to spoil and/or slip (hair loss).
  • Bears
  • Improper skinning, which can result in added expense or unnatural seams on the mount.
  • Improper storage.
  • Thawing in transit - most hides, if not salt and split properly, will thaw in transit and will spoil due to harsh temperatures.
  • Turkeys
  • Recovering a bird while it is still thrashing, this causes feather damage and/or loss.
  • Shooting a bird too low on the neck or while still in-strut at close range, this causes feather damage and/or loss.
  • Blood on feathers – after shooting a turkey it is very important to clean the blood off feathers to avoid matting. Blood is very acidic, and will remove the sheen and luster from the feathers. Putting a paper towel or napkin in the turkey’s mouth will help prevent blood leakage.
  • Western Big Game
  • Improper storage.
  • Improper de-fleshing before adding salt – if you are going to preserve your hide with salt, you must remove all meat and be knowledgeable on proper splitting and turning of the ears.

Feel free to contact us and discuss your hunt, accommodations, and expectations of how you want your trophy mounted so we can advise you on proper skinning and fleshing. We can also make arrangements to have your specimen dropped off immediately upon your return. Please visit the video page to see some of the more common specimens being properly skinned and prepped for taxidermy.
